Facebook isn't known for a popular instant messaging system, but if you don't have any other means of communicating with certain people, the least you can do is make experience more convenient. For this particular purpose, you should have a look at Messenger. This lightweight application with a simple name gives you the possibility of chatting with people on Facebook, from the comforts of your desktop. This means that you don't have to open your browser and go to Facebook when you wish to speak to someone.

Once Messenger is up and running on your Mac, you only need to type in your Facebook login credentials on its user interface, after which you can start chatting with your contacts right away. Contacts are displayed in a list, on the left side of the window and you can chat with selected people on the right side.

Even if you have a large number of contacts, you can find specific people instantly, just by typing their names in a search box, above the contacts list. Additionally, you can search for other people who are not in your list in a similar fashion. Besides exchanging text messages in real time and including images and emoticons, it is also possible to make voice and video calls. A high quality video and audio quality should be expected when you make a call.

If you wish to chat with your Facebook friends in a comfortable and convenient manner, then Messenger is definitely for you.

Pros

You can chat with your Facebook contacts from your desktop. The application provides high quality voice and video call capabilities. It is offered free of charge and it can be installed in no time.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to mention.
